Fucoidan Effect and Multiple Myeloma

In the previous blog, I have explained cancer and fucoidan effects of the blood-related disease. This time, I would like to talk about the multiple myeloma and fucoidan effect, which have a rapid progression.

Multiple myeloma is a malignancy of plasma cells that are blood cells. These blood cells are formed from B cells, which are a type of white blood cell, among blood cells that are made in a “blood factory” called bone marrow. These cells work to make “antibodies” that protect the body from foreign substances such as bacteria and viruses that have entered the body. These plasma cells turn into myeloma cells that give rise to multiple myeloma. When Myeloma cells multiply in the bone marrow, it cannot attack foreign substances and continue to make useless antibodies called M proteins. These myeloma cells and M protein cause various symptoms.

Multiple myeloma is known to interfere with the process of making healthy blood cells (hematopoiesis), producing a proliferation of myeloma cells in the bone marrow and thrombocytopenia. This process and interference may cause bleeding tendencies. Besides, myeloma cells occupy typical plasma cell loci, resulting in decreased immune function (decrease in average antibody production). Also, as a symptom due to M protein (abnormal immunoglobulin) that myeloma cells produce, indefinitely causes renal disorder and blood circulation disorder (hyperviscosity syndrome: Kanekinshokougun).

Multiple myeloma

If the immune system is compromised, infections such as causes shortness of breath and dullness due to anemia, diseases associated with leukopenia, pneumonia, and urinary tract infections are more likely to occur. Also, osteoclasts (cells that dissolve bones) stimulated by myeloma cells destroy bone tissue, resulting in bone pain, pathological fractures, and paralysis due to compression of the spinal cord (cough). In addition to disease and other issues, hypercalcemia may occur due to the dissolution of calcium in the blood. Besides, it causes various symptoms, such as deterioration of cells.

I would like to recommend treating diseases such as these with natural remedies. However, most people treat most health issues with western medication. So I want to support managing it together!

For example, according to the research by Jinglong Lv et al., “Fucoidan prevents multiple myeloma cell escape from chemotherapy-induced drug cytotoxicity” minimal residual diseases (MRD) occurrence with some chemotherapy drugs promote tumor cell escape is that a critical factor in blood malignancy recurrence. So then, they observed that Cytarabine promotes multiple myeloma (MM) cell escape in vitro model. The mechanism of Cytarabine that helps MM cell escape is closely associated with the up-regulation of CXCR4 (associates with several cancer promotions). SDF-1α can up-regulate the expression of MMP9 and RHoC proteins (MMP9’s most widely associated pathologies is the relationship to cancer) in MM cells with up-regulated CXCR4, and further promote the cell escape.

Fucoidan has attracted much attention for its multiple biological activities and benefits. It is also tested for the effects and possible underlying mechanisms of Fucoidan on MM cell escape from Cytarabine cytotoxicity. As a result, Fucoidan may decrease MM cell escape from Cytarabine cytotoxicity and that Fucoidan can down-regulate CXCR4, MMP9, and RHoC expression. This research provides a new direction for investigating MRD occurrence and prevention.

Besides, according to Fen Liu et al., “Fucoidan inhibits angiogenesis induced by multiple myeloma cells,” Fucoidan possesses an anti-myeloma effect by inducing apoptosis and inhibiting invasion of myeloma cells.  Fucoidan downregulated the expression of proteins, which may be correlated with the reduction of angiogenesis caused by myeloma cells. Furthermore, results were compared from normoxic and hypoxic conditions. They showed that Fucoidan had anti-angiogenic activity.
